A Westside couple, vacationing in Australia, hope the be able to vote in Saturday's municipal election.
New rules allowing mail-in-ballots have been instituted in many B.C. communities, including Westside, meaning people vacationing in warmer climates at election time are able to vote.
District of Westside Returning Officer, Karen Burley, says she issued 66 mail ballots. She says 61 have been returned so far.
"I am thrilled with the success of the District's first mail ballot voting opportunity," says Burley.
"Although the legislation has opened it up for anyone to participate in mail ballot voting, there is only a small window to obtain a ballot and have it back in the District prior to the November 15 deadline."
Burley says printers were able to get ballots to the municipality October 27, a week ahead of schedule.
"Because of this, many voters travelling to Mexico, the States and abroad were able to cast their vote prior to leaving."
She adds one couple vacationing in Australia contacted her about receiving a mail ballot.
"They were willing to pay the courier costs, so we sent the ballot. We haven't received it yet. I hope it gets here before Saturday night."
Other mail ballots have been sent by the municipality to the United States and Vancouver.
Meantime, Burley says 1,485 ballots have already been cast for the November 15 election.
These include 61 mail ballots, 28 mobile votes and 1,396 advance ballots.
Election day is Saturday, November 15.
Voters can cast ballots at one of five polling stations in Westside, including
- Glenrosa Elementary School, 3430 Webber Road
- George Pringle Elementary School, 3770 Elliot Road
- Constable Neil Bruce Middle School, 2010 Daimler Road
- Rose Valley Elementary School, 1680 Westlake Road
