Lumby house fire

The house is barely standing, but no one was injured following a structure fire in the North Okanagan.

A home in Lumby has been devastated by a fire which broke out around 6:30 Sunday morning.

Fire Chief, Tony Clayton, says a family of five was home when the fire broke out, but they all got out okay.

“The house was located on Highway 6 about eight kilometres from the nearest hydrant and almost at the end of our fire protection boundaries. We had to call for assistance from the Lavington Department,” says Clayton.

He says there were visible flames when crews arrived.

“Crews were on scene for close to five hours. The house is still standing, but it’s not livable. It’ll be up to the insurance company if it needs to be torn down completely.”

Clayton says the fire doesn’t look suspicious.

“There will be an investigation by the Regional District, but it’s looking accidental.”

He says neighbourhood residents have already started coming forward to offer support to the family.
