Westside has a race for mayor

There will be a race for mayor after all.

Peter Haslock has filed nomination papers for the new municipality's top job. He will square off with current councillor, Doug Findlater.

"I'm a 'D' type personality, I'm a leader," says Haslock in his decision to run for mayor instead of a seat on council.

"I was never happy with being an assistant coach, I always had to be the coach. I don't want to be the guy at the back of the bus, I want to be driving the bus."

Haslock, 48, is a long time Westside resident.

He says he's watched a lot of things happen over the years, both positive and negative. He says it's time to stop talking about getting involved and do it.

As for issues, Haslock says growth and youth issues top his list.

"We're in a huge growth cycle here. The area has expanded exponentially, it's crazy. I'm for it, but what I see is that a lot of the development we've experienced has been uncontrolled. To a degree it's like people are handing out building permits like pens."

Haslock says he wants to be part of the long-term success and prosperity of the community.

He adds part of the change needed in Westside involves demonstrating to the youth of the area that they are valued and have a place in the community.

"Over the years, all I've seen is the few attractions we had designed for youth torn down. They've all disappeared in the name of progress. There's nothing here for kids to do."

Voters in Westside will go to the polls November 15 to elect a new mayor and council.
