John Zeger has made it official.
The spokesman for Citizens For a Livable Downtown has officially declared himself a candidate for Kelowna City Council.
Zeger made an unsuccessful bid for council in 2005 when he ran under the banner of Action for a Sustainable Kelowna. He finished 23rd.
"There are many issues of concern to Kelowna residents in this civic election. Chief among them is a lack of public trust and confidence in City Council and the civic administration as revealed in the 2008 Citizen Survey," says Zeger in making his announcement.
"At the root of this lack of trust is City Council's handling of the Simpson Covenant issue and the lack of meaningful public participation in decision-making in this city. The only way the public can once again have trust and confidence in their civic representatives is through the election of an all new and different city council."
Zeger says he is also campaigning against the rapid pace of growth in the city and the lack of affordable housing.
"I strongly believe that high rise development should be confined to Central Kelowna in the area between Spall Road and Highway 33 and should not be occurring in our historic downtown or in established residential neighbourhoods."
He says he also supports the creation of a Municipal Housing Corporation which would build and manage rental properties throughout the city.
To date, 20 people have filed nomination to run for Kelowna Council.
Four incumbents, Carol Gran, Colin Day, Barrie Clark and Norm Letnick are not seeking re-election.
Kelowna residents go to the polls November 15.
