Kelowna RCMP have a warning for motorists.
Obey school bus stop signals or you will be charged.
RCMP Constable, Steve Holmes, says police will be targeting drivers who do not obey the law when driving near school buses.
"When those stop signs come out from the side of the bus and all the lights are flashing, that is a signal for any motorist going in either direction to stop completely and wait," says Holmes.
"The reason for that is obvious. You've got kids that are travelling across the road to get to the bus across lanes of traffic, either coming or going."
The fine for failing to stop for a school bus is $167.
Holmes says police will be taking a number of steps to monitor the activity of motorists around school buses.
"We will have traffic members on some buses. We have also asked bus drivers to make reports of offending vehicles. Those reports are given to us along with video footage from cameras that are mounted on the bus."
He says police have to take these measures to ensure motorists know how to conduct themselves around school buses.
In February of this year, School District 23 spent $50,000 to equip some of its buses with video equipment to monitor the actions of motorists.
SD23 Transportation Supervisor, Dave Misener, says each day, as many as 22 drivers illegally pass a school bus while its lights are flashing.
