To the editor:
It is interesting to read the drama being laid out by a group of people that live in or near the land between the two one-ways of Highway 97, called the neighbourhood of Westbank.
I have lived on the Westside for 25 years in a number of different houses. I have never lived in the neighbourhood of Westbank. I have never had a Westbank mailing address nor a Westbank phone number.
Last year I enrolled in a democratic process to lead to the formation a NEW municipality. The NEW municipality was selected by the majority of the voters. The vote was very clear on the point of a NEW municipality. No where did the vote suggest that all the areas on the Westside would amalgamate with the small ferry dock location of Westbank.
The name Westbank does not have any association with me. I drive the land on the right side of the one-ways when I go to Vancouver. I again pass through the widening in the road when I return from Vancouver. Other than that, I have very little association with the whistle stop of Westbank. I do have a lot more to do with Shannon Lake, Lakeview Heights, West Kelowna Estates, Rose Valley and the industrial area on the fee simple lands in the Lakeview Heights Industrial area. So in essence I have a lot of association with the Westside, but very little with the neighbourhood of Westbank.
We already have a good NEW name for our municipality. The name of the Westside District Municipality is only nine months old. I cannot understand the basis behind the strong and vocal energy being expended by petitions and pestering our politicians to change it.
I encourage these people to instead expend their energy in making the Westside a proud municipality. This negative and frictional name division agenda that you have is senseless. The name Westbank has no association with the Westside other than as a component of it. It is merely the historical name of a ferry docking site that is a very small component of the area within the Westside District Municipality area. It has no further significance than that and accordingly, you call your neighbourhood, Westbank, I will call mine Lakeview Heights, or West Kelowna Estates, or Rose Valley, and we will all be part of the Westside District Municipality.
Proud to be a citizen of the Westside District Municipality,
Dave
