The Westside fire department is warning residents about the dangers of using water on electrical fires following an incident Monday.
Just before 11 a.m., crews were called to a house in the 2000 block of Shamrock Drive to respond to a possible structure fire.
Assistant fire chief, Darren Lee, says when they arrived on scene they found a burning power pole and cedar hedges.
“The fire was threatening to extend to a parked motor home and two nearby homes. Crews had to quickly halt the actions of several neighbours who were attempting to extinguish the burning power pole, due to the danger of electrocution,” says Lee.
He says once the neighbours were moved back to a safe distance, crews were able to put out the fire.
“The cause of the fire is due to a broadcast burn that had escaped containment. Telephone, cable vision and electrical service have all been impacted in portions of the Westbank area.”
Lee says extreme danger is presented by any fire involving energized electrical equipment.
“Only a fire extinguisher rated for “Class C” (energized electrical equipment) should be used in such a case. The use of plain water or other unsuitable material presents a significant electrocution hazard.”
No one was injured.
