Fire burns part of train tracks, tires

It was a quick spreading fire that consumed some unusual things.

Fire fighters from Lake Country and Kelowna responded to a call of a brush fire on Beaver Lake Road Wednesday afternoon.

Assistant Lake Country fire chief, Aaron Weller, says the fire started in a pile of wood scraps before travelling down some train tracks.

“It burned down the train tracks for about 150 feet, at which point it jumped a chain link fence and moved towards an old crane. It burned the tires out from under the crane,” says Weller.

He says the entire area the fire spread to was filled with tall grass and weeds.

“There was nothing really stopping it. It took us about a half hour to contain and there were about 14 firefighters on scene for about two and a half hours.”

Weller says the blaze was human caused, but they don’t know who is responsible.

“We heard that there were some kids seen playing by the tracks about the time the fire was reported, but that’s just speculation. We don’t have any way to prove who started it.”
