Horning against Joe Rich gravel pit

by - Story: 39754

Al Horning says he's against it.

The Kelowna-Lake Country MLA says he's against a proposed gravel pit in the Joe Rich area.

The proposal calls for a pit near Black Mountain with access off Pyman Road at Highway 33.

The proponent recently put up a sign at Pyman Road indicating people had 30 days to speak up, but government officials say that 30 day window does not exist because the developer has yet to file all the necessary paperwork.

Joe Rich residents are holding a special community hall meeting Thursday night at 7:30 and Horning says he'll be there.

Horning says the idea of additional gravel trucks rolling up and down Highway 33 is a scary one.

“My view is that we’ve got enough problems with Highway 33 right now. It’s a dangerous road. We get Chambers trucks going up and down there, it’s single lane and people get mad and pull out to pass when they shouldn’t.”

Horning says Highway 33 needs to be widened and that he has made his view clear to the Minister of State for Mining, Kevin Krueger, who wasn't aware of the gravel pit proposal.

Regional Director for Joe Rich, Patty Hanson, says she's against the pit proposal. Hanson is out of the country and will not be in attendance at Thursday's meeting. Her alternate is not sure if he can make it.
