To the editor:
I was told by a long term resident of Kelowna that having rabbits within city limits is a no, no! We actually have a bylaw banning rabbits within city limits. I guess they are considered livestock. She had mentioned it was a very old bylaw. We should look back into the archives at City Hall and see if this is true and enforce it!
Would it be too hard to ban the sale of rabbits in pet stores? It is by far, easier to buy a pet rabbit in a pet store than anywhere else. The child wants a cuddly, soft bunny, only to find out afterward that the bunny grows up and is a little more aggressive and harder to handle. They start to bite, scratch and become sexually mature soon after you purchase them. They need to be spayed or neutered before they reach maturity because of their aggressive behaviour.
Bunnies can make wonderful pets for someone who wants to spend the next five to seven years caring for them. If a child asks for a pet, think it over. Ask anyone who had a bunny and a high percent will say they dumped it off on McCurdy, Enterprise Way or the SPCA. I have a few friends who did just that (Enterprise Way). They joked about seeing the offspring running around! Check out your local SPCA, you will find up to twenty cages of rabbits or guinea pigs at any given time.
Once we figure out how to remove the rabbits that are running loose, let's find a solution to keep this from happening over and over again.
