To the editor:
Who will be first? It's been discussed, debated and now it comes down to luck. I've heard of a couple of contests put on by local radio stations to "win" the right to be the first to cross the new bridge. What a farce. I am absolutely disgusted by this gesture. Couldn't the "powers that be" come up with something better than a contest?
My grandfather not only helped build the bridge but was also one of the original toll takers. He was even interviewed by a local newspaper a while ago about his past and his thoughts on the new bridge. Why not do something that commemorates those that worked on the old bridge as well as those working on the new one? I have an idea - why not find the few original workers left, the current workers and their families and have them all go across together? I think that would be a wonderful gesture of thanks to those that constructed our past and those that are building our future.
I can't believe that a moment as important as this would be left up to chance and luck of the draw. Happy dialing and good luck.
