Last one collects the prize

To the editor:
As the new bridge nears completion, I have been hearing a lot about who will be the first to cross it. There is even a contest to determine who will be the first vehicle to cross, the first pedestrian, the first cyclist and so on.

However, I don’t recall hearing about any contest to award the last driver over the old bridge. This is the real prize, in my opinion.

I think that I have a really great shot to come in last, if I plan it just right. As far as I know, the new bridge will officially open on Sunday, May 25 but will actually open for traffic on Monday, May 26. As we all know, this is the weekend after the May long weekend. The end of May is known as the unofficial start to summer in the Okanagan and the beginning of real traffic.

To come in last over the old bridge would be a huge accomplishment.

I spent several hours in traffic on Friday planning my goal to be the “last one” when I realized that it’s all in the timing.

Here is what I came up with: I will leave my house in Westbank on Friday May 23rd to arrive at work in Kelowna on Monday morning. By the time I finally arrive on the Kelowna side of the bridge after 72 hours in traffic, it should be early Monday morning just it time for them to shut the old bridge down behind me.

Please let Minister Falcon know that I will meet him near the lights on Abbott to collect my prize.
