The Third Annual Lumby Air Races are coming next month.

Hosted by the Lumby Air Force, the races will be held in conjunction with the Lumby Day festivities, which will take place between June 13 and 15.

Race director, Randy Rauck, says the air races are for hang gliders and para glide pilots and the complete race course will be visible from anywhere in and around downtown Lumby.

“The format will be valley triangle and rectangle racing around the town of Lumby and spot landings a mile north of town at the Rauck farm. Pilots will take off from Coopers Launch or Saddle Mountain at the edge of town. Some may even be towed up behind powered ultralight aircraft for demonstration. Multiple flights per day will be allowed for the pilots to help them improve their ranking and to allow more color over Lumby Days,” says Rauck.

He says there will be open and intermediate classes for foot launched hang gliders and open and intermediate classes for foot launch para gliders.

“The best flight per day will be used for scoring. Pilots will use GPS navigation equipment to confirm making the turn points and the pilots that make the most turn points in the fastest times over the three days will be the winners.”
