The District of Westside's financial contribution to the May 25 bridge opening celebration continues to rise --- thanks to its citizens.
Westside Mayor, Rosalind Neis, says cheques totalling more than $1,800 have been dropped off at the municipal office, with more on the way.
"We've received 19 cheques for a total amount of $1,865," says Neis.
"I've heard there are more coming in."
Neis says she plans to extend an invitation to Kelowna officials to come to the Westside, likely next Wednesday to officially hand over the funds.
The campaign began a few weeks ago after Westside Council spurned a suggestion by Neis that the municipality contribute more that the $1,500 cake to the celebration.
Neis had hoped the municipality would kick in another $3,500.
Westside residents have since taken up the cause.
Businessman Randy Quigley, donated $1,000 while Casa Loma resident Ken Hargreaves began an email campaign, asking friends to donate as well.
Neis says she doesn't think the municipality looks cheap.
"I'm not even looking at it that way at all. It's an effort by individuals in the community that, and I hate to use the phrase, 'put their money where their mouth is.' People have been willing to come up to the plate and recognize this is a huge event."
The mayor is still not sure all of the particulars about the day as far as the Westside is concerned.
She says she has been asked to say a few words and will be part of the group the crosses the bridge during the opening ceremonies.
"There are still things they are trying to figure out as to the schedule. I do know I plan on spending all day there with my kids and my family and taking in the events that will be on-going."
Events will take place from 11 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. in City Park.
