What is your perception of crime in the Central Okanagan?

If you're like most people, Kelowna's top cop says it's the wrong one.

RCMP Superintendent, Bill McKinnon, told City Council crime in Kelowna is down, however, that is not the perception among the general public.

"I can bring in the stats for the last two years. Crime has gone down in Kelowna and crime has gone down across the country," says McKinnon.

"But, the perception by the general public that crime is rampant, especially in the downtown core."

McKinnon says he sat in on a presentation recently which talked about crime and the perception of crime and what makes people think there is more crime in a community.

"Fear of crime is something we really struggle with as a society. I don't want to get into specifics, but there are a number of indicators that make people think crime is up that are really petty offences, but make it appear that crime is up in their community."

He says he will share specifics the next time he speaks before City Council.
