Iron Man to blaze box office
Tonight in theatres across North America (including showings here in Kelowna), Iron Man officially opens the summer blockbuster season. Studio expectations are pretty high – the film is expected to gross between 85 and 90 million dollars. Some analysts are concerned that this week’s release of Grand Theft Auto 4 for XBOX 360 and PS3 may hurt the movie’s numbers, but I don’t know if I agree. Even gamers who’ve been glued to their TV screens for the last three days playing GTA will see Iron Man if they want to see it. Some may question Robert Downey Jr.’s ability to carry an action flick, but the buzz on him is very positive, and reviews are equally encouraging. Word of mouth may actually push the numbers closer to 100 million, but we’ll see. The rumor has already begun in Hollywood today that a sequel is inevitable in will hit screens in 2010.
Small spoiler to parents: your kids may be disappointed that they won’t get to see Iron Man in action until well into the movie’s 2 hour and 6 minute running time.
The other film opening this weekend, Patrick McDreamy Dempsey’s Made of Honor, is expected to gross about 14 million and is already receiving very negative reviews.
Rob Lowe Lawsuit
Seems that the Lowe’s former nanny, Laura Boyce, is ramping up her allegations of sexual harassment to now include Rob’s wife, Sheryl. The details are really graphic, and not something I want to get into in this forum, as there are far too many references to penises! I will say this: Gloria Allred is one huge media whore. Gloria, please go away. This lawsuit is really ugly, and you’re not doing anything to help.

John Mayer – Paparazzi Whore
Does John Mayer ever have anything interesting to say to the TMZ paps? Why does TMZ even bother with this guy? Leave him alone and he’ll go away. Unless those rumors of him being with Jennifer Aniston are true, in which case I’ll have to talk about him again. I’ll admit it, Your Body is a Wonderland was a good song, but that’s where my appreciation for Mr. Mayer ends. Here’s a video of him trying to be funny, but as always, failing:

Kim Kardashian Pictures! Sadly, her True Assets Absent
Back at TMZ, they’ve posted 25 pictures of Kim and Khloe Kardashian at the zoo in Australia. Say what you want about her lack of personality (I know I have), but the girl is definitely hot. But if you’re going to show us 25 pics of Miss Kardassian (no, that’s not a typo), can’t you at least give me one with her most famous (though likely surgically enhanced) body part?

Chad Kroeger Sentenced for Drunk Driving – Still Allowed to Make Bad Music
Chad Kroeger, singer of Nickelback, was fined 600 dollars and will not be able to drive for one year. The sentence was handed down today by a judge here in beautiful BC. He’s been caught drunk driving before, and I think the sentence was a bit too light. Drunk driving happens far too often and stiffer penalties should be the norm. Anyway, if only the judge went one further and prevented Chad and the Nickelback boys from making more music. I was once a fan, but they’re music lately is so formulaic and boring!
Leona Lewis #1 on Billboard Singles Chart
Simon Cowell’s latest discovery, Leona Lewis, fresh from an American Idol appearance last week, is #1 this week with Bleeding Love. The song was good the first few times I heard it, but grows thin rather quickly. Love the voice, but I’m already getting sick of hearing her. This year’s most interesting single, Lil’ Wayne’s Lollipop, drops from #1 to #2. Mrs. Showbiz HATES the song, but I can’t help but love every second of it. We’re at the point where it’s fun just arguing about it!
Last Night’s TV Ratings (source: zap2it.com)
"Deal or No Deal" won a soft 8 p.m. hour for NBC with a 5.3/9. A "Price Is Right" prime-time special drew a 4.7/8 for CBS. '"Til Death," 3.6/6, and "Back to You," 4.5/7, put FOX in third, slightly ahead of "Wife Swap" on ABC. "America's Next Top Model" delivered a 2.8/5 for The CW.
FOX zoomed into the lead at 9 p.m. with the "American Idol" results show, 13.3/20. "Criminal Minds," 8.3/13, kept CBS in second. A second hour of "Deal or No Deal" was third for NBC, while "Supernanny" earned a 3.7/6 for ABC. The premiere of "Farmer Wants a Wife" on The CW drew a 1.7/3.
"CSI: NY" scored a 7.5/12 at 10 p.m. to give CBS the lead. NBC's "Law & Order," 6.5/11, beat ABC's "Boston Legal," 5.0/8, for second.
Idol won again, no big surprise. I’m somewhat shocked to see Brooke White go home. How long can Syesha survive? Likely only one more week, because if Jason wasn’t leaving last night, after weeks of horrendous performances, he obviously has enough of a fan base to keep him to the top 3.
Tonight on TV
Network TV’s best comedy, the Office, is on again with another new episode. This one focuses on Stanley, who has got to be one of the greatest secondary characters on TV. Should be great seeing more of him. The Office has been slightly hit and miss since the writers strike, but it’s still great TV.
In hockey, Pittsburgh tries to close out the Rangers and the Wings try to sweep the Avs. Can the Pens keep their undefeated streak in the playoffs alive?
Survivor, which I must admit to really liking this time (the last few seasons have been ok, but not great), should have another interesting episode tonight. According to Jeff Probst, in tonight’s episode the immunity idol plays a big part yet again. Also, James may have to be sent home due to an injury to his hand.
EXTREME SPOILER ALERT – FINAL TWO
Do not read further if you don’t want to know whom the final two are for the Survivor finale.
According to many reliable sources (who are rarely wrong), Amanda and Parvati will be the final two, along with Cirie who makes final three.
Think about it, it makes complete sense. I’m not really telling you anything that you couldn’t really figure out if you thought it out.
