Westside residents pony up

Ken Hargreaves is the latest Westside resident to question his Council's fiscal decision surrounding the May 25 bridge opening party.

A week ago, Westside Mayor Rosalind Neis, asked Council to approve an additional $3,500 on top of the $1,500 the community is already paying for a cake.

Council voted down the request by a 4-2 vote.

Hargreaves says he started a campaign four days ago, asking anyone on the Westside who wished to contribute to the party on behalf of the municipality to join him in doing so.

"Some people may not want to pay and I can understand that. I do and so do a number of my neighbours," says Hargreaves.

"So does some guy who gave them $1,000, and I hear there is another one of those around somewhere."

Hargreaves says what began as a neighbourhood request has spread throughout the entire Westside Municipality.

"I'll be quite blunt, we've gone beyond our own community because we've been asked to by different people. There's a lot of emails going out. It's exploded. I didn't think it would do this."

He says the reaction to the campaign has been positive.

"From some people, it's been absolutely surprising."

Hargreaves is a resident of Casa Loma. He says his political feelings regarding last year's referendum did not influence his decision to start this campaign.

"I knew that would come up, but this has nothing to do with that. I now live on the Westside and we're dealing with our own Council and I disagree with the amount they arrived at. That's basically it."

He says anyone who wishes to join his drive should make a cheque payable to the City of Kelowna, indicating it is for the bridge celebration and deliver it to the District of Westside office in the Westbank Lions Hall on Main Street.

Neis will apparently deliver any cheques received to Kelowna City Hall sometime next week.
