Graham Reid will be a one term mayor - by his choice, not the voters.

The Mayor of Peachland has announced he will not seek re-election, nearly eight months ahead of the November 15 civic election.

He served one term as a Councillor in Peachland before succeeding Bob Harriman as mayor in November, 2005.

Reid says he and his wife have been discussing for the past couple of years where they would like to spend their retirement years.

"I used to live on Vancouver Island so we've purchased a home on Vancouver Island and we'll be heading there when my term is over at the end of the year," says Reid.

"I think we are going to see a fair change in our council and I thought a well qualified mayor would have lots of time to consider whether they want to run and to do a campaign. Quite often if you announce in August, it's quite a short time for people to put together a campaign."

Reid says he doesn't plan to endorse any one candidate leading up to the election.

As for his lone term as mayor, Reid says he will let others rate his performance, but say it was a very enjoyable three years.

"We had a very good council. People were very committed to the community and we worked well together. Occasionally, the votes went with a few dissents but in most cases, our opinions were unanimous."

Reid says he is most proud of the water master plan he was able to help spearhead.

"When I ran for council I ran on the issue of water and I'm happy that my colleagues have worked hard towards getting that plan in place. I think in the long run it will do very well for Peachland when other communities are just kind of struggling to come to grips with some of the water supply issues they'll face."

He says he worked extremely hard on the water issue because he recognized climate change was coming.

"We were going to see significant changes in water supply and demand in the Okanagan Valley and that communities that relied upon upper reservoir lakes were going to have to be well prepared for it."

Reid says his one regret is not being able to come to some sort of decision on what to do with the old Peachland Primary School.

"That's proved to be a struggle for our Council, so it will wait for the next Council to decide."
