Goats interrupt Highway 97 widening

The expansion of Highway 97 north of Summerland is being hampered by the presence of a local mountain goat herd.

Environmental agencies are preventing blasting work from taking place near an area that is inhabited by mountain goats.

Arthon Contractors spokesman, Steve Dimond, says it will mean re-arranging the construction plans for the roadway.

"We've continued blasting, but only outside certain distances from the goat's bluff, right at the south end of the job. It'll be another week or two before we finish up there and by then we should have a little more of a consensus on how to handle the goat's bluff," says Dimond.

He says they will likely skip over the goat area and proceed with work on the north side until a determination is made on what to do about the goats.
