They want a crosswalk on their road.
Residents of a Kelowna neighbourhood want for a crosswalk to be built at a dangerous intersection, a fight which has intensified following a fatal accident last week.
Kelly Sali, who lives on Prior Road North in Rutland, says the intersection at Prior Road and Highway 33 is dangerous and needs a crosswalk.
“It’s one of those things we walk by everyday and think, ‘we should have a crosswalk here.’ In November of last year, a friend and I were walking our kids to school and we used the walkway which comes off Prior. As we were crossing, we were almost hit by a car,” says Sali.
He says they went to the principal of the school to see what could be done about the intersection to keep kids safe.
“From there we organized a meeting with the safety officer for the school district, the school principal and a representatives from the RCMP. We set up a second meeting with some residents and a rep from the Highways Department, which was basically to get the ball rolling to find out what we‘d have to do to get a crosswalk. We convinced them it was time to start looking at the intersection.”
Sali says this meeting took place just a week before Patrick Robinson, 55 was killed after being hit by a car while crossing at the Prior/Highway 33 intersection.
“We were essentially saying, ‘there’s an issue here, someone could get hurt’ and that ‘s just what happened a week later. Kids are still crossing there and that’s scary.”
He says they spoke with a representative of the Ministry of Highways and they have agreed to start looking into the situation.
