A public hearing will be held next week to determine whether the Blue Gator Bar & Grill can extend its liquor serving hours.
The Blue Gator is located at 441 Lawrence Avenue in downtown Kelowna.
Presently, the Blue Gator operates from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 2 a.m. Sunday.
Bar owner Larry Smith has applied to have the hours extended to 9 a.m. until 2 a.m. seven days a week.
Smith made the application on September 11, 2007.
"The Willow Inn Hotel is closing on September 30, 2007 and the 9 a.m. opening has been ongoing there for years," says Smith in his application to the City.
"Many customers will be looking for an early opening operation. We will operate a full service kitchen from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily."
Smith is also asking for permission to extend service hours on the patio until 2 a.m.
"We would also like to request permission to serve or allow alcohol on our patio past the current restrictions of 11 p.m., much the same as other licensees such as Doc Willoughby's, Sturgeon Hall and The Grateful Fed. There are little or no residential spaces in our area at the present time."
In a report for City Council, staff has recommended against the extension, in part because the new hours would not be consistent with the kitchen hours.
"Although no change to licensed area has been proposed and the extended hours will be confined to the interior of the establishment, there is concern that expansion of the hours of service for liquor sales only would be inconsistent with the spirit of the Kelowna Downtown Plan to renew the image and economic health of the downtown," says the report.
The public hearing will be held in Council Chambers Tuesday, January 8 at 6 p.m.
Members of the public wishing to speak in favour or against the application are limited to five minutes each.
