Staying healthy over the holidays

Family get-togethers, office parties, eating, drinking and bingeing..oh my! For some, the holiday of good cheer can disguise itself as a private nightmare. With lists that seem to go on forever, gaining weight and getting crabby, it’s no wonder the holidays can wreak havoc on your body, mind and spirit. Believe it or not though, there is no reason why you can’t enjoy yourself and stay healthy over the holidays, both mentally and physically.

Don’t try to start a new diet this time of year. You will only be setting yourself up for disappointment, resentment and depression. You can stay healthy and not be too restrictive with the following tips.

Exercising everyday can help battle the stress of shopping, being in larger crowds, and being surrounded by platters of homemade cookies. Twenty to thirty minutes of exercise a day is all it takes. Get to the gym, take a walk outside, or simply join in the hustle and bustle of walking through the malls.

Many women allow the busy holiday season to throw them off their regular eating schedule. In order to keep your metabolism up you must remember to eat small frequent meals. Don’t fall into to the trap of skipping meals in preparation for a big dinner. This can invite a binge that could set you back for days. You can and should enjoy holiday eating. It just takes a little planning. Don’t feel guilty if you over indulge – enjoy it and get back on your regular eating schedule as soon as possible. Remember, the holidays are days, not weeks, not months but days. Treat them that way.

It wouldn’t be the holidays without an extra glass of wine, rum and eggnog or a few beers with friends and family. The key is not to over indulge. A hangover worsens fatigue and energy levels. Make sure you are not drinking on an empty stomach and keep snacking throughout the night. If you do find yourself hungover, drink plenty of fluids and get some extra rest.

Finally, the holidays always add a little more stress. Between trying to shop, worrying about family get-togethers, getting the kids ready for their holiday concerts and class parties and still dealing with day to day stressors, it is important to take some time for yourself. Schedule a massage, buy a new book, learn to meditate – whatever it takes. Find something that will curb your stress besides eating.

Even if you fall completely off the wagon, don’t beat yourself up. Get right back on your program without missing a beat. Many women think their entire diet is ruined by one fall. They feel as if everything they’ve done prior to that day was wasted and there’s no sense in going on. Or even worse, they drop out. You’re only human. Don’t let one small slip keep you derailed. Firmly plant your wheels back on the tracks and start rolling again. This is a season that is full of joy, love, and many good things if you let it be just that. Let your body and mind tell you what it needs, wants, and can do without. Live a little, but don't go overboard if it is only going to make you miserable the next day. It is supposed to be fun and it will be if you stay true to yourself and your needs.
