Council ponders pontoons

Two of the pontoons on the soon-to-be dismantled floating bridge could be converted into a public pier for downtown Kelowna.

That recommendation comes to city council Monday, along with a budget estimate for the project of $3.2 million.

City staff say that's how much it would cost to move and anchor the two big pontoons, plus convert them to a usable public pier. The preferred location is right at the foot of Queensway Avenue.

The new Bennett bridge is scheduled to open next summer, and the SNC-Lavelin, the bridge-builders, say they need a firm decision from the city on the old pontoons by the end of January.

Pontoons that aren't recycled into piers or breakwaters will be dismantled.
