December blood drive begins

Canadian Blood Services is about to launch it's "Brighten a Life" Campaign.

It encourages all Central Okanagan residents to save twice as many lives by donating blood with a friend during December.

“During the holiday shopping season, parties and to-do lists, we hope that people will take an hour out of their month to come in to donate blood for those in need,” said Tammie Watson, community development coordinator for the Kelowna clinic. “This is the one gift where the cost is free and your gift goes directly to three people.”

She says this year, Canadian Blood Services in British Columbia will need to collect 1,200 red blood cells or platelet donations between December 3 and January 4 to help meet hospital needs.

"As well, donors can fill out cards to give to those who have never donated encouraging them to provide a life-saving gift for the holidays."

Kelowna's donor clinic will be closed Christmas Day but open Boxing Day from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
