Pier Pub fire: Update

Investigators are not ruling out arson as the cause of Tuesday night's blaze that leveled the Pier Marine Pub.

The vacant structure, located at the west end of the floating bridge, went up in flames shortly after 7 p.m.

Westside Fire Chief, Wayne Schnitzler, says the fire started at the back of the structure, but says it's too early to determine if the flames originated inside or outside of the building.

"We're not sure about the area of origin. We're waiting to get some statements from people who were on the scene at the start of the fire."

Schnitzler says some heavy machinery will have to be brought in to lift the destroyed roof of the former pub/restaurant before investigators can get access to the gutted building.

"It could be a long day, but hopefully we will come up with a solution."

Police investigators say they're looking into the cause.

"There is currently a joint investigation involving both police and fire services. Arson has not been ruled out in this matter," says Constable Adam Fisher.

He's asking for anyone who might have witnessed something suspicious prior to the fire to give him a call -- (250) 768-2880.

Former Westbank Chief Ron Derrickson is believed to be the owner of the building, which has been sitting vacant for more than a year after a former school principal tried to make a go of it. The Pier Marine Pub has also been linked to the Hells Angels.
