Cusworth report complete

It took nearly a year but an independent review of the Jennifer Cusworth case is complete.

Cusworth, 19, was murdered in 1993 after leaving a Kelowna house party and her killer is still at large.

For the past 14 years, Jean and Terry Cusworth have been coming to Kelowna looking for their daughter's killer.

They returned Monday and announced that a review of their daughter's police file is done. Retired Victoria police officer, John Farrell, has been sifting through the 15 boxes of evidence and statements in the Cusworth case and recently handed over his report to Kelowna investigators.

"He's an officer who thinks outside the box. He went through all the boxes over a year. This man knows the file inside out," says Gene Cusworth.

The lead investigator in the Cusworth file, Constable Bill Parmar, says Farrell didn't find any problems with the police investigation.

"There were no flaws in the investigation itself. The avenues that John Farrell identified were persons of interest, but he didn't find any flaws in the investigation."

Parmar says Farrell did ask him to revisit certain people that need to be questioned again and to look at using better technology that wasn't available 14 years ago including enhanced DNA testing.

Meantime, two of Jennifer Cusworth's school mates have come forward to offer free workshops on how to deal with attacks.

Project SAFE is the creation of Avril Tory and Bethany Bedard who attended elementary school with Cusworth.

They're currently working with martial arts instructors and recruiting volunteers to help women learn how to defend themselves.
