A local group has set its sights on making a difference for people in a war-depressed African country.
Young adults from the Kelowna Christian Center shaved their heads Thursday in support of the “Village of Hope”. The Village is a charity project centered in Gulu, Uganda.
$1000 was raised from the head-shaving event. Spokesperson for the group, Susanna Furgason, says that the money will go towards text books, supplies, desks and teachers for the school that is being built in the Village of Hope. She says that the intent of the fund raising is to provide those being helped with “what we are blessed with in Canada -- safety, health, education, and freedom to live their lives.”
According to Furgason, the biggest problem the country has to deal with these days are the hundreds of thousands of internal refugees as a result of over 20 years of war. She suggests that those wanting to bring themselves up to date on the humanitarian crisis facing Ugandans should watch the film “Invisible Children”. The movie focuses on children who had to walk every night into the city for a safe place to sleep, so that they would not get abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army.
Donations can be sent via cheque or money order to:
