A suspicious fire early Sunday morning cause extensive damage to a building in the Columbus Manor Housing Complex on Highway 33.

Kelowna Fire Department Assistant Chief, Kerry Klonteig, says the fire appears to have started in a recycling bin in the front of the building, which served as a common room, laundry and office.

"Upon arrival crews found a building with heavy fire in the front and roof area of the structure. An aggressive quick knockdown prevented severe damage to the building," says Klonteig.

He says the RCMP have taken over the investigation.

Klonteig estimates damage at about $40,000.
