Missing Harness To Blame

by David Fowler - Story: 31375

A missing electrical cable harness is to blame for tonight's Canada Day fireworks cancellation.

Canada Day Fireworks were set to go off about 10:30 pm from a barge anchored near Waterfront Park.

Apparently, the fireworks contractor went to look for the harness in storage and came up empty handed. The City only found out about the problem this morning and there was no way to alter the show to meet safety regulations.

According to Reid Oddleifson, Manager of Recreation Services, the harness is unique to the fireworks industry for triggering the fireworks and couldn't readily be sourced elsewhere, never-mind on a busy Canada Day. Oddleifson says it's not known what happened to the harness.

The City has successfully used this year's fireworks contractor in the past including Kelowna's Centennial, and Canada Day in 2005 and 2006.

The City will be pressing the contractor for further explanation next week.
