Without farmers market, grower hits the road - on his E-bike

Farmer comes to you

With his E-bike and trailer, Vernon farmer Greg Hewitt hit the road Friday morning.

Hewitt, of Lake View Farms, was making deliveries of his greenhouse-grown micro greens.

In business only one month, Hewitt and partner Dawna Bates, had been counting on trading at the Vernon Farmers Market, but the coronavirus has put a hold on all large public gatherings.

So, Hewitt saddled up and said he'd probably put on about 60-80 kilometres making his rounds.

Despite the farmers market closure, he and few vendors stopped by Friday morning so regular customers could make pick-ups. Then, he was off to make deliveries across the city.

"We've got more crop to harvest, so I will be doing this for the next while," said Hewitt.

And, he's been getting a positive reaction.

"People think it's great. They want to know where I got the bike and the trailer. Because it's an electric assist bike, I can easily do long rides without getting winded."

He says he can do 28-30 km/h, even with a loaded trailer in tow, packed with his organic pea shoots and other greens, a lawn chair, and point of sale equipment.

By going mobile, he can also limit close interactions, as the public is asked to practise social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19.

"And I'm staying healthy, getting exercise, and delivering healthy food to people," he said.
