The Economy of Disease

Let me make one thing clear your disease is worth more than your health and possibly, worth more than any other investment you may have. The unfortunate thing about this is you probably cannot sell this investment to turn a profit to use it in your retirement.

The treatment of chronic disease is a multi trillion-dollar industry when you factor in all the “supplies”, doctors, health care workers, facilities and so on. I know that to some this is a touchy subject, but read on.

There are agencies whose job is to canvass for money on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry. All this is being done under the guise of research for the cure of the particular disease of the month. Can we all be that gullible, after decades of research all these research organizations can come up with is: eat broccoli, do not smoke, stay out of the sun and get daily exercise-give me a break.

Here is the heart breaking truth and I will try to be gentle these organizations are not looking for cures. These organizations are looking for ways to prolong the disease state in people in order to maximize profits.

If you have ever noticed that the “latest research findings” are conveniently released just before the latest, door-to-door campaign is about to begin you may have noticed the wording, here is one example. “Drugs Prolong Life After Heart Attack-Canadian Study Shows Higher Death Rate Among Those Who Stop Taking Prescribed Medication”. Those particular headlines came out on January 09, 2007 to promote deadly channel blockers and statin drugs coincidently just weeks before the annual heart month campaign was about to begin. This is so people would have it fresh in their mind and would want to give more to the cause. It happens every year and it is no accident, it happens with diabetes, cancer, kidney, lungs and so on.

Many research studies now focus on things like better adherence to drug programs means longer life, which I translate into meaning longer life means more money. What I am about to say may upset you but read on.

Instead of donating to a particular organizations campaign under the guise of research, let the pharmaceutical industry finance their own illusions and research because unless they are handing out these so-called miracle drugs free, they can afford to pay for their own research. In turn, they can then give money back to these organizations to help people with a particular disease at the community level.

If you want to give, give to organizations like hospice house or other types of community-based service.

I am truly empathetic toward individuals and families who have been affected by any disease, especially children. In my own family, we have been affected but this is where it gets touchy. It is an emotional issue and people give money freely from their heart when in that state, so this disease will never affect anyone again.

According to the Campus Newspaper of Southern Mississippi, The Printz, in their January 23, 2007 edition. The headlines read: “Scientists cure cancer, but no one takes notice” it goes on to say, “Researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton found a cheap and easy to produce drug that kills almost all cancers. The drug is dichloroacetate…” it goes on to say “Doesn't this sound like the kind of news you see on the front page of every paper? The drug also has no patent, which means it could be produced for bargain basement prices in comparison to what drug companies research and develop.”

I guess if they let people have it, too many people will be cured and of course, there is no money in that. I will let you consider those facts, and then ask yourself, are you supporting a disease economy or a health economy. In the mean time, eat broccoli, do not smoke, stay out of the sun and get some exercise.
