Okanagan curling team wins gold at B.C. Winter Games

Kelowna gold in curling

After four days of exciting action, the 2020 B.C. Winter Games have ended in Fort St. John,

More than 1,000 athletes competed in 15 sports at the games, including the Okanagan's very own Team Rempel, which won gold in curling.

The Kelowna Curling Club group placed first in girls curling, and Team Trip from Penticton placed fourth in the category.

Team Rempel consists of skip Hannah Rempel, third Vivian Schmeeckle, second Megan Rempel and lead Lauren Cochrane.

Team Rempel coach and Canadian champion curler Wendy Cseke says the team overcame tough competition in the final game, beating out Team Richards from Comox Valley.

"The girls have spent countless hours on the ice practicing and competing in leagues and bonspiels around the Thompson Okanagan region over the last couple of winters. They are sure a dedicated group and such a pleasure to work with."

A volunteer force of 1,600 people worked at the B.C. Winter Games in Fort St. John to ensure an outstanding experience for all athletes and visitors.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Lisa Beare, says she is confident the Games will be the beginning of greater things for the athletes.

“Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 2020 BC Winter Games! Your achievements and spirit have inspired so many of us across the province. Thank you to the community of Fort St. John and everyone involved in making these Games a wonderful success. I know everyone will leave the Games with new experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

The 2020 B.C. Summer Games will take place in Maple Ridge from July 23-26. Full results and photos can be found at www.bcgames.org.
