Officials are working on ways to improve evacuation plans

Planning for the worst

City officials are working on ways to improve evacuation plans in the event of an emergency.

"The risks and vulnerabilities of our neighbourhoods are ever present," said Sue Sanders, emergency program coordinator.

Among the potential emergencies is wildfire.

Specifically, the city is looking at how to evacuate areas that only have a single road in and out.

Officials are looking at using existing overland routes, such as forestry roads, or identifying new routes.

The city is also pursuing grants for fuel treatments to key vulnerable evacuation corridors with high fire risk. This would make these roads less susceptible to extreme fire behaviour or downed trees closures.
