STEM workshop for grade 6-7 girls at Coldstream Elementary

Future women of science

Over 100 girls in grades 6 and 7 from the area were taught the ins and outs of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at Coldstream Elementary School on Tuesday.

A workshop featuring 16 mentors currently working in STEM professions taught the youngsters the basics of each category, as well as speed mentoring sessions with the girls telling them what each profession is like.

"We want to show them what potentially is out there for them," says Danielle Calder, one of the mentors. "All the mentors are from the area, so it shows the girls that there are opportunities for them close to home."

The students were really enthusiastic about the workshop and what it offered.

"I really enjoyed the part where the mentors were coming around and talking to us," says Cedar Goyette, a grade 7 student. "We got to ask them questions and they gave great answers to us."

This is the first year for the workshop, and the organizers were very happy with how it worked out.

They said that it will hopefully become an annual event, so they can educate as many girls as they can.
