The Okanagan Sun saw their hopes of finishing above 500 dashed

Rain washes out Sun

Playing in a steady downpour for much of the game, neither the Okanagan Sun nor the Westshore Rebels were able to make much happen offensively.

But, it was the Rebels who were able to make the most of their opportunities, beating the Sun 16-9 in Langford Sunday.

The win means the Rebels will host the VI Raiders in one semi-final next weekend, while the Sun travel to Langley to face the 10-0 Rams in the other.

All the Sun points came from special teams.

Kicker Isaac Wegner boomed a pair of singles, while defensive back Garrett Cape scooped up a blocked punt and scampered into the end zone with their only major of the afternoon.

Cape's touchdown, on the opening play of the second quarter, gave the Sun an 8-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long.

Shawn Lal hooked up with Will Harris for a long touchdown on the Rebels next possession to bring Westshore to within a single point.

Moments later, the Rebel had a chance to hit paydirt again after recovering a fumble at the Sun six. However, the defence held on third-and-one.

Three plays later, after failing to get out of the shadows of their goalpost, the Sun conceded a safety in punt formation, and the lead for good.

Offensively, the Sun were unable to pick up a first down in the first half, going two-and-out on seven of their possessions.

Back-up Zach Britton, who took over for the final two series of the first half, was able to generate some offence in the second half, mainly off the legs of running back Kelton Kouri.

The Rebels put the game all but out of reach late in the third when Zachary Lubin ran in from six yards after a muffed punt gave Westshore the ball at the six.

The Sun had one final chance when a short punt and penalty gave them the ball on the Rebels 37 with less than three minutes to go.

They were able to march inside the 20, but the drive stalled when Alex Douglas, who returned late in the game, was unable to connect in the end zone on third and seven.

The Rebels ran the clock out.

The Sun finished the season 5-5 while the Rebels went 8-2.
