Tactical officers had guns drawn as police swarmed on Westside

Tense police standoff over

UPDATE: 2:35 p.m.

A police incident that prompted the closure of a portion of Gellatly and Witt roads has ended peacefully, RCMP say.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., police were called to a home located on the 3000 block of Wetton Road, for reports of a disturbance involving a distraught and barricaded male.

Const. Lesley Smith says in order to ensure public safety, police closed access to the area and called in tactical support.

The Southeast District Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and crisis negotiators helped officers communicate with the distraught male.

“The 42-year-old West Kelowna man has since exited the home, where he was taken into police custody without any further incident.” says Smith.

UPDATE: 2:20 p.m.

While the tactical unit van has left the area, residents say there is still a heavy police presence on Wetton Road in West Kelowna.

Wetton turns south off of Witt Road.

"They still have heavy police and military vehicles on my street – nothing has cleared out," says a Castanet reader.

Residents heard a few bangs and saw police dogs and handlers in backyards.

They say they were told there was a shooter in the area.

UPDATE: 2:05 p.m.

Police have now left the Gellatly area, and the road has reopened.

UPDATE: 1:55 p.m.

Residents report seeing heavily armed police in military fatigues in the area of a police lockdown on the Westside.

Officers have guns drawn.

It's not yet known what prompted the heavy police response.

Roads remain closed in the area of Gellatly, Carrington and Witt roads.

UPDATE: 1:35 p.m.

Police also have Witt Road blocked at both ends.

Photos from Castanet stringer Randy Millis show an RCMP tactical unit truck, fire engines, police cruisers and an ambulance in the area of Carrington and Gellatly roads.

Castanet's Wayne Moore is in the area, and just heard what may have been a police flashbang grenade.

RCMP are expected to issue a statement shortly.
