Century 21 agents across Canada targeted by creepy caller

Female realtors creeped

A Kelowna real estate agent is warning other female realtors to be aware of an online creeper going by the name of "Jay."

Lani Rae, an agent with Century 21, says she got an inquiry from a man who told her he and his wife were looking to move from Saskatchewan to Kelowna and that he had found her name on the Century 21 website.

"I set up a Skype meeting with him and was asking all the usual questions. He was alone, and I could only see his side profile, which I thought was strange," says Rae.

"As the conversation continued, things started to get stranger," she says. "I asked him if he was typing or taking notes, and then I realized what he was up to. I asked if his wife was going to join the conversation, and the Skype terminated."

Rae posted screenshots online and started hearing from realtors from across the country about similar experiences, with a man of the same description on Skype and phone calls, all with similar disturbing stories.

"I contacted RCMP, but their hands are tied because a crime wasn't committed. I'm just concerned what's next if he gets tired of phone calls and Skyping? I did hear that he has asked to meet some realtors in person," said Rae.

"So far, he seems to be only contacting Century 21 female realtors, but I have advised the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board of the situation.

"It's a good reminder to employ safety measures every day, like meeting clients at the office, pre-qualifying, getting identification, never doing an open house by yourself, using your gut instincts," said Rae. "I want people to know when we ask for ID, it's for reasons like this, and we are trying to ensure our safety."

"It's tough because in real estate you have to put yourself out there with your contact information. It's a fine line to walk."

She encourages any other realtors who have had a similar experience to report it to the RCMP.

"Maybe they can locate this guy, knock on his door and have a chat."
