Scheer promises tax cuts

UPDATE: 9:35 a.m.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer announced two new tax measures aimed at helping families during a campaign stop in Lake Country Monday morning.

“This election will come down to one question: Who do you trust to put more money in your pocket for you, for your family?” said Scheer.

The Tory leader said under the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit, a new Conservative government would:

  • Allow parents to claim up to $1,000 per child for expenses related to fitness or sports-related activities.
  • Make the credit refundable so low-income Canadians benefit most.
  • Allow parents of children with disabilities to claim an additional $500 per child, per year.

With the Children’s Arts and Learning Tax Credit, the Tories would:

  • Allow parents to claim up to $500 per child for expenses related to arts and educational activities.
  • Make the credit refundable so low-income Canadians benefit most.
  • Make it flexible, so children can get extra help studying a language or learning science, math or coding.
  • Allow parents of children with disabilities to claim double the amount, up to $1,000 per child, per year.

Under Justin Trudeau's Liberal government, Scheer said "Canadian families are under pressure and worried about their future. Half of families are just $200 away from insolvency at the end of each month. Canadian families’ net worth declined for the first time in a decade. And because of Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax, every day essentials cost more and more."

Scheer promised to cut taxes for every working Canadian by implementing the Universal Tax Cut; support commuters with the Green Public Transit Tax Cut; and, support young families by making EI maternity and parental benefits tax-free.

Leader of Canada’s Conservatives Andrew Scheer will be visiting the Central Okanagan this morning to make a campaign announcement.

Scheer will be speaking at Beasley Park in Lake Country at 9 a.m.

On Sunday, Scheer continued his pitch to voters in Surrey with the promise of a new tax cut for the lowest income bracket earners, slicing the rate from 15 per cent to 13.75 per cent.

The Conservatives estimate that could save a two-income couple earning an average salary over $850 a year. The party says the tax cut will be phased in starting in 2021 and fully implemented by 2023 if it wins the Oct. 21 federal election.

Scheer also made news this week on his views regarding gun laws following Mississauga's fatal shooting on Sept. 14.
