Iain Kerr has been in the Okanagan for 30 years and hasn't seen anything like the giant, striped insect he and his kids spotted near Oliver this summer. 

"It was pretty docile, it was on the ground, one of my sons pointed it out to us," he said. "I couldn't see a stinger, but it was huge."

Kerr took a photo of it next to a broad head from a crossbow bolt for scale. 

"When it took off, because it flew away, it sounded almost like a bird, the way it flapped," he explained. "I've never seen it before."

Kerr was inspired to send the photo in to Castanet by other posts from Okanagan residents seeking insight into their creepy crawly discoveries. 

"I just thought, I want to know what this is!" he said.
