Teen granted bail again

An 18-year-old Kelowna man who seriously injured a young man last year when he crashed a stolen truck has once again been released from custody on bail.

In May, Orin Lucas pleaded guilty to nine charges relating to seven separate incidents over the previous several months. The most serious of the incidents occurred on Dec. 5, 2018, when Lucas crashed a stolen Ford F-150 into a Mitsubishi SUV in Rutland, seriously injuring the 22-year-old man inside.

Justice Andrew Tam sentenced Lucas to a total of nine months for the nine charges, and he was given enhanced presentence credit of six months. After earning time for good behaviour while in custody, Lucas was released on two years probation in mid-July.

Shortly after his release though, he was charged again for incidents that allegedly occurred before his previous stint in jail.

He's been charged with breaking and entering at a West Kelowna home on Dec. 5, after police found evidence in the stolen truck Lucas ended up crashing that linked him to an earlier break and enter. In July, Crown prosecutor Martin Nadon conceded this charge should have been laid prior to his sentencing on the other charges.

He's also been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property over $5,000 from an incident in March 21.

While he was granted bail on these charges, he was arrested in late July, after he allegedly failed to answer his door on three separate occasions during curfew checks by RCMP officers.

Earlier this year, Lucas was charged with breaching his bail conditions on multiple occasions, before a Lake Country man took matters into his own hands in April. Lucas eventually pleaded guilty to one count of breaching his bail conditions.

On Wednesday, Justice Lisa Wyatt granted Lucas bail once again, with a $5,000 surety, on the condition he be electronically monitored to ensure he's inside his home between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. every day.

Lucas will next appear in court on Sept. 5.
