Cycle Cycle recycles cycles

For the past 25 years, Dan Klick has been heading to work at Venture Training where he turns broken bikes into working bikes.

Klick enjoys what he does at Cycle Cycle, one of several programs operated by the Vernon-based group that works with adults who have developmental challenges.

“I know how to fix bikes,” said Klick. “I used to tear bikes apart at one time, but now I automatically know how to fix them.”

Klick said they take a lot of pride in making sure the bikes are in good shape and ready to ride when they are sold.

Ryan Cucheron, Venture executive director, said Cycle Cycle fixes up donated bikes and then resells them. If they bikes are beyond repair, they are stripped of all valuable parts with whatever remains heading to the recycling bin.

The program also holds bikes found by police and if no one claims them within 90 days they are fixed up sold.

The program is a win-win for the community. It offers adults with special needs a place to belong, to learn some skills and it provides area residents with some inexpensive bikes and parts.

“It's what we call a social enterprise of a program, so all of the money that we generate and all of the donations go back into the program,” said Cucheron, adding numerous adults of varying ages work in the show at the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Alexis Park Drive, 4240 Alexis Park Dr.

“It gives them a real good sense of purpose. They feel really great about the fact that they worked on that bike. They see someone happy leaving the store and the realize they had a part to play in that,” said Cucheron. “It's good for the community and for our participants.”
