Police seek to ID body

RCMP are looking for help identifying a man whose body was found near a burning truck south of Dease Lake last week.

Police released a composite sketch of the man in hopes of identifying him. He was found at a highway pullout on Highway 37 near the Stikine River.

He is described as:

  • Between 5 foot 8 and 5 foot 10
  • Caucasian
  • Heavy build
  • 50 to 60 years old
  • Grey hair and grey bushy beard

The man was found near a truck being driven by Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, both from Port Alberni.

The men were travelling to Whitehorse to look for work, but it's unclear why they returned to B.C.

They were travelling in a red and grey Dodge pickup with a camper, and were last seen travelling south from the Super A general store in Dease Lake at Thursday, July 18, around 3:15 p.m.

The truck was found the next day, July 19.

Police say it’s unclear whether their disappearance is related to the body. Police are still working to identify the body, and said it does not belong to either of the men.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 1-877-543-4822 or 778-290-5291.
