3rd police chase for woman

A Penticton woman who just can’t stay out of the driver’s seat or stop for police when asked was sentenced to 210 days in prison Monday, for her third flight from police conviction.

Connie Marie Clarke, 27, appeared in Penticton court after pleading guilty to flight from police, dangerous driving and driving while prohibited for an incident on May 14.

Castanet was not in the courtroom when the Crown and defence made their submissions, but Judge Michelle Daneliuk said in her sentencing officers tried to pull over Clarke on a downtown Penticton road around 5 p.m. She fled from police twice, forcing officers to disengage the chase, twice, for public safety.

“Cutting off vehicles, driving on the shoulder of the road,” Daneliuk described her driving.

Just one month prior, Clarke had received a 91 day jail sentence for another police chase, with yet another conviction for flight from police on her record back in 2017.

At the time of the incident in May, Clarke was under at least three driving bans that were in place through to 2022.

“This behaviour ma’am, has absolutely got to stop. You’ve got to stop driving until you are legitimately able to drive again, and that won’t be until 2022,” Daneliuk lectured Clarke. “When you don’t stop, you create an incredibly dangerous situation for the public, for police officers that are forced to chase you and yourself as well.”

“You really knew that you would be in really big trouble if you didn’t pull over, and you still didn’t pull over," the judge added.

Daneliuk sentenced Clarke to 210 days in prison. With credit for time already served, she has 117 days left on her sentence. Clarke now has a total of five driving ban attached to her abstract.

She has a lengthy criminal record for property and drug related offences dating back to 2015.
