Off-leash plans on agenda

Vernon City Council will be looking at formal plans for an off-leash dog park at Marshall Fields during their regular meeting Monday afternoon.

Council will be looking at directing administration to take steps to establish a permanent off-leash area within Marshall Fields. Among other issues to consider, council will look at protecting sensitive habitat and addressing erosion and safety concerns.

Part of the plan is to design a new layout of soccer fields and parking to determine the optimal alignment of a four-foot-high chainlink fence to separate a permanent off-leash area from all playing fields.

Fines for dogs on field

Council will look at authorizing $240,000 to construct a fence to separate the playing fields, re-route parts of the footpath, plant a vegetative buffer, remove access between the ponds at Lakers Disc Golf, re-route the loop trail near Lakers, initiate the renewal agreement to protect Great Basin Spadefoot Toad within the city, continue the abeyance of the on-leash bylaw where current off-leash rules apply in Marshall Fields, and install clear signage reflecting changes.

Council will also be reviewing the latest legal cannabis store application for 3109 - 30th Ave. at the former Eden dispensary location.

Turtle Mountain boulevards

After significant back and forth and concern from residents that live up Turtle Mountain, Vernon council will be deciding whether to spend $175,000 to clean up the boulevards leading up the hill to The Rise community.

Council will also review whether they want to approve an annual maintenance cost of $75,000 for the reduced service level in the Turtle Mountain Boulevard areas, and to be included as a service level increase for 2020 and beyond.
