Westside fire now out

UPDATE 9:38 p.m.

West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund said the fire is now out.

“BC Wildfire Service dispatched ground crews as well as birddog and tanker aircraft. The aircraft surrounded the fire with retardant, creating a fire guard. Ground crews from both agencies worked to complete a hand guard around the fire and complete extinguishment. Limited access combined with a lack of available water sources in the area proved challenging.”

Brolund said 20 West Kelowna Firefighters along with four fire apparatus worked alongside command and safety staff to bring the fire under control.

The fire grew to approximately 100 by 200 feet, but no homes were threatened.

“Crews from the BC Wildfire service will remain on patrol at the scene into the overnight hours and WKFR crews will return as required in the morning,” said Brolund. “The cause of the fire was not able to be determined, nor was a determination of if the fire was human caused.”

This is the third urban wildfire in West Kelowna in the last 24 hours.

“An extreme fire danger rating, weather conditions, including wind have combined to challenge our fire department,” said Brolund. “In all cases, firefighters have responded quickly and effectively to keep the fires small and protect life and property. We are grateful to our partners from the BC Wildfire Service who have stood alongside us and provided tremendous ground and air support today as well as all the other emergency responders who have also assisted.”

UPDATE 8:11 p.m.

West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund said air tankers have dropped fire retardant on the fire that is approximately 800 metres from the nearest road.

“We have multiple crews on scene. The fire is roughly 100 by 200 feet and it is burning rank two or three, so it is not candling, but it is starting to climb the trees,” said Brolund.

“The air drops are complete and we are working with BC Wildfire to build a guard around the fire.”

Brolund said there are homes in the area but none are currently being threatened by the flames.
