Ex Rocket leads Canada

Former Kelowna Rockets' defenceman Damon Severson made sure Canada had a chance to move on at the World Hockey Championships.

Trailing Switzerland 2-1 with seconds remaining, Canada was buzzing all around the Swiss net looking for the equalizer.

The puck found Severson at the right point. His initial shot was blocked, but he teed up the rebound as time expired. The puck hit Leonardo Genoni and trickled over the goal line as the game ended.

A video review confirmed the puck crossed the line with 0.4 seconds left in regulation.

"I felt like I was going to score tonight, I had that feeling going into the game for some reason," said Severson following the game.

"I didn't think it was going to be with 0.4 seconds left, but sometimes you get that feeling. I took the first shot, the guy made a heck of a block, then the second one I just tried to get it to the net as soon as possible because I knew time was running out."

Mark Stone converted an odd-man rush at 5:07 of the three-on-three overtime to send Canada to the semi-finals.

Canada's semi-final opponent won't be determined until the other quarter-finals are concluded.

The semi's are set for Saturday.
