Vegan week in Kelowna

Madison Erhardt

You don't have to be a vegan to appreciate Kelowna's first vegan awareness week.

On Wednesday morning Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran stood outside City Hall and read a proclamation to declare May 19th to May 26th the official Vegan Awareness Week.

''It's important to us because of the animals. That is what a real ethical vegan stands for. We are trying to convince people to look at animals differently. We aren't concerned about just dogs, cats and horses. It is about all animals,'' said Dr. Moira Drosdovech.

Basran says he is happy to get behind the vegan community, but also stresses that he isn't endorsing all of Kelowna to become vegans.

''I'm surprised to hear this is the first Vegan Awareness Week in the country. I think that the more education people have about the choices that they make is a good thing. I think this festival does exactly that.

VegFest Kelowna takes place Sunday, May 26th from 10 a.m. to 5p.m. at Immaculata High School.
