Racing to the top of Knox

The smell of high-octane fuel and burnt rubber filled the air of Knox Mountain Park Saturday for the 62nd year in a row.

The annual Knox Mountain Hill Climb kicked off early Saturday morning, after most of the 62 racers packed the park with RVs and camping set ups the night before.

The time trials see cars of all shapes, sizes and speeds fly up the switchbacks to the top of the hill, with the best clocking in times under two minutes.

“It's been fantastic, we've got 11 new drivers here this weekend,” said Matt Scaife, one of the event's announcers.

“We've already seen a one minute 48 seconds, which is only 11 seconds off the record ... we've already had a half a dozen personal bests and some of the new drivers have just been spectacular this weekend.”

Scaife says some of the new drivers out this year are as young as 19.

And while racing is the main focus of the weekend, it certainly isn't the only thing going on. Once the engines turn off Saturday, Kelowna's The Insiders will hit the stage at 6 p.m., playing live music until 9 p.m., while the beverages flow at the beer gardens and the food is served at the food trucks on site.

The action continues Sunday until 5:30 p.m., followed by a trophy presentation for the fastest times of the day.

For those interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the event, Scaife says they are still looking for any volunteers who'd like to help out Sunday. Volunteers can meet at the base of Knox Mountain at 7 a.m.

“It's a great event, it's been around for 62 years,” Scaife said. “It's one that we're very proud to put on every year, and we get a lot of support from the community.”
