Multicultural garden plan

The City of Kelowna wants to know your ideas for a new multicultural garden at Rutland Centennial Park.

With construction well underway, residents are invited to share ideas on what will be included in the garden.

You can see garden details and talk with the project team at an open house May 22, 4-6:30 p.m. at the park.

“By creating a space for a multicultural garden at Rutland Centennial Park, we hope to honour Rutland’s heritage and cultural diversity,” says Melanie Steppuhn, park and landscape planner. “We want to hear from individuals and different cultural groups regarding what a multicultural garden might look like and what types of plant species, types and colours are culturally significant to them.”

The garden is one component of improvements at the park including a new sports field, accessible playground, pathways, benches, landscaping and more. Phase 3 improvements are expected to be complete by the end of May, and plants will be added to the garden following the open house.

“What we hear at the open house will help us determine which plants to add to the garden, in consideration of other factors such as maintenance and climate suitability,” says Steppuhn.
