Killed in snowmobile race

UPDATE: Sunday 6:20 a.m.

The remainder of weekend hillcross snowmobile races have been cancelled at Sun Peaks Resort after a competitor died on Saturday.

Kamloops RCMP say the 28-year-old Alberta resident was airlifted off the mountain to the medical centre at the resort, where he passed away due to serious injuries sustained in a crash during competition.

“Ski patrol was on the scene immediately to provide medical assistance,” Sun Peaks spokesman Aidan Kelly said on the resort's website. “An air ambulance was also called to the resort. Unfortunately, the snowmobiler passed away as a result of injuries sustained.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends, event organizers, and all those involved. This is a tragic incident, and we will do everything we can to assist during this difficult time.”

The 28-year-old Alberta man was competing in the Sun Peaks Snowmobile Hill Climb, part of the Western Canada Hillcross tour, when he crashed just before noon, and sustained serious injuries.
